LeBron James opens the “I PROMISE SCHOOL” in Akron, Ohio

LeBron James is the most recognizable athlete in the world. As we all know on June first he made headlines, when he signed a 4 year-154 million dollar contract to play with the Los Angeles Lakers. His decision to leave the Cavaliers was a hard one for James, considering he is from Ohio, but it was a decision that we all thought he would eventually make. Today he made the news for an even bigger reason. Today, Lebron James opened an elementary school in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.

LeBron James, although he is the ultimate success story, knows how hard it for less fortunate kids growing up to get a good education. James said he opened the school, located down the street down the street from his high school, because he knows exactly what young students are going through. ” I know the streets that they walk. I know the trials and tribulations they go through. I know the ups, the downs, I know everything the dream about and the nightmares they have…because I’ve been there. They are the reason that this school is here today.”-LeBron James

LeBron of course was present on the opening of his I Promise School and gave a great speech, as you can see in the video below. So many times us as sports fans we criticize athletes for things they do on the court, but we down respect what they outside of sports. With the world going in the direction it’s going, it’s wonderful to see a man in his position make a positive impact. LeBron James didn’t have to create this school, but he wanted to. He loves his home town of Akron, Ohio, and he showed it by doing the biggest thing possible to help the community. I couldn’t imagine what it would feel like as a kid to go to my hero’s school. Everyday those kids that are lucky enough to attend will have a greater sense of purpose in their lives. That they can achieve anything, because they know LeBron James gave them a greater opportunity to better their lives. Today was a great day for the city of Akron, Ohio, and I hope the LeBron James has inspired everyone to give back to their community, in whatever way they can.

“The most important thing we can give them is structure. They want to feel like we care. They have dreams, they have aspirations. They just want to know someone cares.”-LeBron James
